Ignis Fatuus - Slowianska Trwoga Wiecznych (2008)

This is the first full-length release from the Polish pagan black metal act, after a series of demos and an EP last year. Their sound could be described as very primal and raw, the vocals and drums are very loud in the mix, though the guitars remain audible. I can't really make out a bass, for all I know it's absent entirely. The tone and mix differs on several tracks, it may have been recorded at several times.

As far as the songs, they vary in quality from average to weak. A few such as "Trwoga Wiecnych" and "O Lasach" were pretty forgettable, but the band does spit some venom and fire with "Piastun" and "Schreiben Sie". Lyrically the band seem to focus on the natural side of things, as opposed to occultism.

This album will have little appeal to anyone outside the connoisseur of grim and primal pagan black metal, and even he/she has a multitude of better options. However, this isn't a 'bad' album per se, it just lacks the creative spark to stand out amidst the frostbitten hordes.

Verdict: Indifference [5/10]
